Genital Skin Conditions
Skin conditions in the genital area are common in both men and women. They often require the help of a specialist.
At Sexual Health North in Joondalup, you can count on our sexual health specialists to help you with the diagnosis and treatment of your genital skin condition. If you’re in doubt about the causes or the treatment that you may need, come and see us for a confidential and judgement-free consult.
What are the symptoms of genital skin conditions?
Genital skin conditions can occur at any age. If you develop symptoms including itching, pain or soreness along with local changes in appearance, colour or texture, it is important to seek help from a health care provider experienced in managing these conditions.
These symptoms may be caused by a localised genital issue or a widespread skin condition, but sometimes they can be a manifestation of a more general medical problem.
It is not uncommon for the symptoms to be due to an infective cause (not necessarily sexually transmitted) such as fungal infections, viral infections such as Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV), Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) or Molluscum contagiosum.
Diagnosis and management for genital skin conditions
There are a number of different conditions that can cause changes to your skin in the genital area.
And sometimes, the skin problem in the genital area is linked to a condition you may have in other parts of your body such as:
- eczema
- psoriasis
- contact/atopic dermatitis
- lichen simplex chronicus
- lichen sclerosus
- lichen planus
- precancer and cancer
- fungal infections, viruses and parasitic infestations
When you come and see us at Sexual Health North, our first step is to establish a diagnosis. That begins by taking a comprehensive medical and sexual history. Please provide a list of products and treatments that you may have used on your skin. We may have to perform a general examination looking at other parts of your body for signs of skin problems as well as a genital examination. We may have to do swabs, blood tests, and also, when necessary, perform a biopsy of the site. Once we have reached a diagnosis, we can discuss an appropriate management strategy for you.
We use our collective 20 years experience in treating a wide range of sexual health matters, to suggest a personalised treatment plan for you. And, whatever the underlying cause of your genital skin problem, you can rest assured knowing that at Sexual Health North we focus on helping you get better.
Size and shape of the vulva
The vulva is often dubbed as the forgotten pelvic organ. This is the name given to the external part of the female sex genital around the opening of the vagina.
At Sexual Health North, we’re here to help, and to give you peace of mind if you have any concerns about the size or shape of your vulva.
External resources such as the Labia Library can also provide reassurance if you have concerns.
